What to Expect

Flow chart of what you can expect when you visit the ER at University Children's Health. If your child is seriously injured, he or she will be immediately seen by our waiting trauma team. Lab work, X-ray and CT scans will be done, and the trauma surgeon will evaluate your child’s injuries and review the plan for care with you. Your child may need immediate emergency surgery or may receive other kinds of treatment in the hospital.

After surgery, your child will be moved to the 7th floor of the Sky Tower where we provide critically-ill and injured children a low nurse-to-patient ratio and a staff of faculty pediatricians with extensive experience handling even the most complex cases.

Our Pediatric Trauma and Burn Follow-up Clinic is located in the Rio Tower on the third floor of University Hospital. Our multidisciplinary team will help your child through the recovery process, whether it involves physical or occupational therapy, pain management, therapy to minimize scarring or psychological support. No other children’s program in South Texas offers such a comprehensive array of services for injured children.
